Rules
The base rules for the club are based off the 2016 revision of the EMA Riichi Rules. The amendments below are made as a difference from these rules.
The following are the differences between the EMA rules above and the rules we play to.
-
When unsuitable numbers are present, the players are chosen according to the following algorithm:
- If in the last event that a player engaged with this algorithm they failed to play, then they are chosen to play. If this is more than four people the result is undefined.
- Remaining seats are obtained by rolling 2d6, with the seats going to the highest rollers (draws re-rolled). Dice rolled off the table score as zero.
-
If the number of players present is not a multiple of four, but a set of games can be played by willing players present playing more than one game, this is permissible. If more than the requisite number are so inclined, the people playing more than one game are determined by rolling as per a single game, with a seperate play and roll history to that of single game 'immunity' for each number of games played at once.
We believe this is silly, but haven't come up with a better system we can agree on yet - When a player discards a tile, they call out the tile name out loud if there is more than one game being played at once, as a courtesy to those playing multiple games.
- Yaku are named according to a set of English names, rather than with their Japanese names
- East may choose to pass the deal if they have just won a hand as dealer.
- The game will additionally be terminated if a player's score drops below -30000 points (i.e. they have no point sticks left).
- The game will continue into West if no player has a score above zero points. If this happens, the game will end if a player goes above zero. If the game reaches the end of North, the game ends at that point regardless.
- The Japanese names for calls (i.e. pon, chi, kan, tsumo, ron) are used - not their Chinese counterparts or any other calls.
- When looking up incomplete games, the oldest games that can be played by the combinations of players available are considered first
